Alchemy's studio, workspace and gallery houses sophisticated, state-of-the-art tools, microscopes and precision equipment necessary to ensure that no detail is left undone during the process of creating custom jewelry, restoring an heirloom piece or recreating a collection of pieces into something new and powerful. Most importantly, Alchemy is populated by a group of devoted individuals intent on creating unique jewelry experiences for every visitor
David Iler, Owner, Master Metal Smith
David Iler began cutting stones at the age of 13, and has been working with metals for more than 30 years. A true artist and craftsman, Iler combines priceless stones and precious metals with boldness and a natural affinity for form, balance and meaning.
From 1998 through 2005, Iler served as lead Master Jeweler for Zell Brothers in Portland. Regarding Alchemy's founding in 2005, Iler shares the following:
After many years of creating some of the finest jewelry possible, and providing outstanding customer service behind the scenes, I knew it was time for me to work directly with customers in order to involve them in the magic and mystery of creating jewelry together.
Iler holds certification from the Gemological Institute of America in diamonds, diamond grading and colored stone identification. When he isn't creating jewelry or concocting new, exotic alloys, Iler enjoys playing music and fishing for steelhead on one of the many pristine rivers of the Pacific Northwest.
Sander Raymond, Associate and Design Consultant
Sander Raymond has been in the jewelry business for 30 years. He began his career as a diamond and jewelry design consultant with the likes of Ben Bridge Jewelers, Weisfields and Keepsake. More recently, Raymond partnered with his brother, the jewelry designer Jay Raymond, in managing Gold Leaf Fine Jewelry.
With Alchemy, Raymond manages Alchemy's retail operations, offering his knowledge and expertise into every aspect of the business, including sales, merchandising, promotion, in-store displays and customer service.
As an expert in trade, Raymond helps guide visitors through the process of selecting the unique piece that communicates the lasting message they wish to share and express.
I joined Alchemy because I trust and believe in our process and vision when it comes to creating and selecting signature pieces, and showcasing those pieces in as tasteful and respectful a manner as possible.
Outside of the world of signature jewelry, Raymond enjoys traveling, gardening, music, playing golf and rooting for the Detroit Tigers.
Laura Mapes, Marketing, Promotions and Design Stylist
Laura Mapes has been working as an artist, designer and promoter for nearly 30 years, and applies her knowledge, energy and zeal as Alchemy's head of marketing and promotions.
Her natural affinity for art and jewelry date back to her early teens, and she has parlayed this joy into a professional background that includes stops as a Designer and Sales Associate with Portland-based Mimi and Lena, a Display Artist with Gari Fine Jewelry, and as an Interior Designer and Finish Coordinator with a number of Portland's finest architecture and development firms.
I loved Alchemy the first time I set foot in the door . . . as a customer. I was treated to a very personalized experience, and felt completely confident that I was getting the best quality service and jewelry available throughout Portland. When I had the opportunity to lead Alchemy's marketing and promotions, I jumped at it. I wanted to be a part of Alchemy's magic, and to be able to take in the store's friendly, comfortable feel on a daily basis.
Beyond Alchemy, Mapes spends time with her son Henry, and enjoys taking in as much of the Pacific Northwest experience as possible, including gardening, skiiling, cycling, and cooking.
